Night Games
Do you ever go to baseball games or do you play baseball with your friends? Have you been to a game a night when the field is bright but the sky is dark and filled with moon light?
While the ability to have night games dates back to the 1880s, owners and big league teams were not impressed with the notion. In the 1930s, the Kansas City Monarchs traveled with portable light equipment to play night games while on the road. The Monarchs were members of the Negro League, managing to survive as a team during the depression by playing exhibition games and night games became an important factor in generating much needed revenue.
The Major League caught on to the idea for night games about five years later. The Kansas City Monarchs also marked history for being the longest running franchise in the Negro League (1920-1962), boasting the talent of players such as Jackie Robinson, Leroy “Satchel” Paige and Bullet Joe Rogan.
