POCKETS and FROG VASES
These small vessels are made from copper using a technique called form folding to created the strong edges. Other tools help shape and bend the form into these small vases. They are then enameled and mounted on used wine barrel staves to keep the organic feel. They can be used for an air plant, dried flowers, to hide love notes, display a found feather, tuck away a wish, a dream, a hope. |
Fold forming is a technique developed by Charles Lewton-Brain that explores shaping metals, such as copper, into fluid shapes and designs. I was introduced to this method by Vicki Cook an artist and teacher at the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph, Michigan. What a delightful and wonderful discovery and one I would have never ventured upon if it were not for her. Thank you to all those great teachers who open doors to possibility.
Working with copper and enamel, the pieces tend to dictate their own direction emerging into shapes and forms of fluid flight. Copper, once heated and worked, defies limitations. Enameling has its own voice and possibly that is one of the things I love about it the most - it never ceases to surprise me.
